Design+Do

Devon Energy | Tom Love Innovation Hub | Engage Learning

Design+Do is an innovative partnership between impact-oriented organizations in Central Oklahoma. Each Design+Do competition brings teams of 5th graders together at the Tom Love Innovation Hub in Norman to put their creative minds to work. As a team, they are given a task to design a structure and then build a prototype out of provided materials such as marshmallows and wooden sticks. Engage is proud be part of this collaborative effort to empower student creativity and Oklahoma’s maker imagination. Thanks to our partner, Devon Energy, for supporting innovative STEAM learning opportunities for Oklahoma students!

Since 2016, the Design+Do Prototype Competition has been Engage Learning’s signature design and creative engineering event. This powerful, eight-week program is led by Engage staff with the support of a teacher facilitator. The competition challenges student teams to imagine, design, and create a functional, scale prototype in response to playful and rigorous design constraints. (Imagine Jetsons-like whimsy meets the functionality of steampunk).

Weekly exposure to next-generation manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing and laser cutting – while also working alongside industry partners and Engage staff – are important parts of the Design+Do student experience. Teachers love participating in this competition, too, as it provides a compelling context for students to solve authentic problems, think like engineers, create something unique, and process their failures and successes, all while collaborating with a team. Design+Do is notable for highlighting the playful creativity and joyful making that is at the heart of most of Engage Learning’s work with students and teachers.
